Age regression is a psychological phenomenon in which an individual mentally or emotionally returns to a younger age. This can occur consciously or unconsciously and may be temporary or part of a broader therapeutic or behavioral pattern.
There are two main types:
Voluntary (or intentional) age regression
Often used as a coping mechanism or form of stress relief. The person may choose to “revert” to a younger mindset, adopting childlike behaviors, speech, and interests. Some find comfort, safety, or emotional healing in this state. It can be part of therapeutic practices, lifestyle preferences, or age regression communities.
Involuntary (or psychological) age regression
Can occur in response to trauma, extreme stress, or certain mental health conditions (e.g., PTSD, dissociative disorders). The person may not be aware they are regressing and may experience loss of adult cognitive or behavioral function.
Clinical use:
In psychotherapy, especially within inner-child work, guided regression is sometimes used to explore early life experiences and unresolved emotional wounds.
Note:
Age regression is different from age play or fetish behavior, although in some contexts (especially adult roleplay or ABDL communities), it can overlap. The intent and emotional focus help differentiate therapeutic or lifestyle regression from purely sexual expression.
